Karoo Accommodation
The Karoo can be broadly divided into two main areas, The Great Karoo which has an area of more than 400,000 square kilometers and the smaller Klein (little) Karoo (often marketed as as Route 62).
The Great Karoo - 250 million years ago it was a vast inland sea, as the world's climate warmed the water evaporated, leaving a swamp where dinosaurs prospered. Today it's one of the driest parts of the country. Sheep farming is the economic backbone with other forms of agriculture taking place in areas where irrigation is possible, game farms and tourism to this fascinating area has also been making an impact in recent years.
The Klein Karoo & Route 62 - One of the Western Cape's most diverse regions situated between three majestic mountain ranges (Swartberg, Langeberg and Outeniqua). Route 62 is the tourist route that meanders between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, offering a shorter, and some would say more scenic alternative to the N2 highway.
