Pan African Market
Housed in an elegant, late Victorian building, this huge indoor market claims to be the largest indoor African craft market in the country. On display are crafts from throughout the African continent. Antiques from Nigeria, brightly coloured clothing, beautifully carved wood statues and artwork created from discarded cool drink cans. The market is located at 76 Long Street [021 424 2957].
Located in the centre of the city in a shady, cobbled square, this is a must see. The square is surrounded by magnificent old buildings with a variety of restaurants and pubs to choose from for refreshments. The 19th century population would meet in the square to hear important announcements, this is the place that all distances to and from Cape Town are measured.
The Red Shed
Located within the V&A Waterfront, the red shed arts and cratfs market is housed in a huge warehouse. On offer are a variety of goods ranging from clothing and toys to jewellery, ceramics, furnishings and woodwork. The market is open from 09h00 to 18h00 Monday to Sunday with extended hours during the December holiday season [021 408 7600]
We have mentioned only a few venues
here but there are many others to choose from. Most weekends and public holidays
see markets springing up all over the Peninsula, we suggest that you try the
market at Milnerton Lagoon every weekend. Also worth a visit is the huge market
held over weekends at Green Point stadium.
